Faithful fellas! Where do Australia’s most monogamous men live?

Is monogamy a really a relic of yesteryear? According to our most recent study, apparently not! In a quest to shatter stereotypes surrounding man’s ability to be faithful, our research team set out on a quest to discover where Australia’s most monogamous men dwell.

Mighty, mighty good monogamous men!

You don’t have to be Salt-N-Pepa to know that one of the most central tenets of gentlemanliness is being faithful. All jokes aside, it’s fair to say that men haven’t garnered the best reputation when it comes to staying true. However, whether that’s an accurate representation is moot, especially if you take the results from our latest study into consideration.

Based on data collated from 13,000 Aussie males registered with EliteSingles, we looked at how closely respondents agreed with the statement ‘I believe monogamy is essential in a relationship’. From this our research team was then able to geographically locate where Australia’s most monogamous men reside.

If you’re looking for a man who’s ready to embark on a monogamous relationship, here are the top 10 cities where you might be able to find him (according to our results that is!):

1. Dubbo
2. Bunbury
3. Cairns
4. Coffs Harbour
5. Albury
6. Orange
7. Port Macquarie
8. Surfers Paradise
9. Geelong
10. Melbourne

NSW: A ‘state’ of monogamy!

Glancing at the map we’ve put together above it’s obvious that the bulk of Australia’s monogamous men are native to New South Wales. Dubbo clinched pole position whilst four other NSW cities also made it into the top ten.

It’s hard to gauge why so many of Dubbo’s single men are passionate about the idea of a monogamous relationship. One possible explanation could be the high percentage of people aged 30-69 native to Dubbo; 48% of the population fall into this cohort1. This could well mean that traditional views about relationships and indeed monogamy are more prevalent here.

Interestingly, an earlier study conducted by our researchers revealed the Central West city as the most child-friendly city in the country too. You’d be hard pushed to find a more family-orientated city in Australia!

Victorian chaps also gave a good account for themselves as Geelong and Melbourne both made it into the rankings. Although the state capital came in at 10th based on a citywide aggregation of our respondents’ answers, Melbournian men living in Northcote actually scored the highest when it comes to monogamous tendencies!

So there you have it, there are plenty of good guys nationwide! It would appear that NSW is the place to be if you want to settle down with a chap who’s in it for the long haul. In search of some clarity we asked our resident psychologist Salama Marine for a bit of insight. Here’s what she had to say:

‘Unfortunately, many women have been cheated on in the past which has made them doubt the existence of men who believe in monogamy. Being cheated on is horrible. Unsurprisingly, it makes many people question the fidelity of men in general. But they shouldn’t allow it to let them lose faith in love! While many women have been unlucky enough to have been cheated on by someone they trusted, there are actually still plenty of men out there who do value monogamy and want to build a lasting and loving relationship. This study demonstrates that.’
